A spray pack primer that works for general powder coating?

We often get asked the question: What spray pack primer paint can I use for powder coating?

Whilst there is a wide variety of primer paint products on the market, the requirements for a product to be suitable for powder coating are pretty demanding.

The product needs to both allow powder to adhere to the primer paint through electrostatic spray application and withstand the high temperatures within the powder coat curing oven whilst still retaining its own adhesion and ultimately maintaining good corrosion protection to the product surface.

One product we have tried and had good success with is Super Etch Primer (Grey) 400g Aerosol available from Boltmasters.

This product is a one-pack epoxy etch primer with good adhesion and anti-corrosive properties. It is suitable for use over most metals, including mild steel, brass, copper, lead, stainless steel, zincanneal, chrome, aluminium and galvanised iron. Once applied, the primer can be left uncoated for up to 3 months before the application of a top coat finish.

Please follow the safety and application information from the product supplier when using. As always, take care to make sure the surfaces you are applying the product to are clean, dry and free from any existing corrosion or contaminants. The SDS for the product is available online from the Wholesale Chemical Company website.

Whilst this product is typically suitable for most general and industrial powder coating projects, please note it is not an approved product for use under the Interpon D, Interpon Meta-plex, Interpon Steelplex, Dulux Alumi-shield or Dulux Steel-shield systems and therefore not be used without prior written approval on projects that specify these extended warranty systems.
